Antelope Canyon continues to capture the imagination and lenses of photographers from around the world.
WORTH THE TRIP?
Probably. In and of itself the canyon is absolutely stunning, but the cost and the relatively quick in-and-out visits may not seem worth it to everyone considering how much driving can be involved. It really depends on how much you love road trips, and if you’re also planning to visit any number of the other incredible nearby attractions (Horseshoe Bend and Lake Powell, Arizona, for example).
ACTIVITIES
- ATHLETES: trail running, hiking, climbing
- ADVENTURERS: climbing, camping, hiking, desert/canyon/lake exploring
- PHOTOGRAPHERS: spectacular imagery on almost every photographer’s bucket list
- FAMILIES: if you’re okay with the admission cost, it’s a breathtaking, lasting memory to share with your family
- KIDS: yes
WHAT TO BRING?
- CLOTHING: Comfortable and sturdy walking or hiking shoes. A light or heavy jacket depending on the time of year (it can get surprisingly cold here during winter months)
- CAMERA: DSLR, and phone or GoPro for video footage.
- LENSES: Wide angle is a must. Bright primes and a midrange zoom could also be particularly useful for portraits and forced perspective shots.
- BACKPACK: Probably not needed since the hike is really quite short. Always a good idea to bring water though and you may still want to bring your camera bag for convenience (we did). Avoid large backpacks. Not only are they unnecessary but it makes moving through the narrow canyon walls difficult and obtrusive.
WHEN TO GO?
Spring or fall for lighter crowds and optimal weather.
SUMMARY
If you love photography, go. If you already have plans to visit other parts of Arizona and Utah that link up nicely with a pitstop here, go. Probably not a place to make a destination in-and-of-itself unless you’re planning to capture some gallery quality images, but it is an astoundingly magical and beautiful place that everyone should make the effort to check off their bucket list at some point.
THE EQUIPMENT WE USED:
- CAMERA: Nikon D300
- LENSES: Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX Lens
