Ancient ruins and emerald beaches of Tulum, Mexico

Turquoise waters and gorgeous oceanside Mayan temples.

WORTH THE TRIP?

You like the beach, right?  Great for romantic retreats, outdoor adventurers (especially for jungle explorers and discovering many rarely seen cenotes) and even family travelers.  Tulum is a far more authentic and rewarding Mexican experience than nearby Cancun, for most travelers.

ACTIVITIES

  • ATHLETES:  kayaking, windsurfing, climbing, biking, hiking, running, exploring
  • ADVENTURERS: kayaking, windsurfing, climbing, biking, hiking, running, exploring
  • PHOTOGRAPHERS:  photo/video-scapes, seascapes, landscapes and dramatic wedding photography
  • FAMILIES:  beautiful and calm white sand beaches, photography, picnicking, hiking for all ability levels, great jungle walking paths both with and without elevation, wildlife parks, waterparks
  • KIDS:  Yes.  Tulum is one of those rare locations that really has something for everybody.

WHAT TO BRING?

  • CLOTHING:  Comfortable hiking or running shoes and obviously, flip flops.  A rain jacket is always a good idea, but not absolutely critical with the year-round warm weather.
  • CAMERA:  Phone or GoPro and a DSLR or prosumer camera for composed shots of the ruins and cenotes. Waterproof casing/housing would come in handy if you have it. If you can only bring one camera, your phone and/or GoPro could suffice.
  • LENSES:  Wide angle will probably get you the most impressive results, but also consider a mid to long-range telephoto or combination zoom for any portraits, sunsets, or dramatic compositions.
  • BACKPACK:  Definitely.  You’ll need just a daypack with ample water supply at a minimum.  You’re missing out if you don’t spend at least part of your time exploring the Yucatan jungle.  It is Mexico and there are many “hippies” around so leaving valuables unattended is never a good idea if you want to keep them.

WHEN TO GO?

Anytime.  Really.  Peak tourist season is usually December, but Tulum has something to offer year round.

SUMMARY

A pretty accessible and easy to enjoy location.  So pack light and leave the extra gear in your car or hotel.

Loving your work! The descriptions are a little thin, but keep at it, your pictures are great! Why do I suddenly crave rum in a coconut? ?
