BOTTOMLINE:

These action/water/sports cameras are a compliment, not a replacement for a decent DSLR or mirrorless camera setup.  They’re best for travelogging video and timelapses that you’d otherwise miss because you don’t want to hassle with (or damage other gear in the process of) getting certain shots.  So basically, don’t break the bank here.  But they’re worth every penny as you’ll likely find they will capably replace half of the shooting that you used to try and do with your phone and DSLR, with WAY less hassle.  You’re also much more likely to always have it on you since it is so compact, easy to use and weatherproof.  The quality and durability of these GoPro cameras is excellent for the price.

WHY GET IT:

Documenting “in-the-moment” footage is a growing expectation of consumers and many clients.  These cameras get the job done with minimal time/energy/expense and add new creative potential to the way you capture and develop your travelography style.  Don’t get too hung up on the reviews here.  It’s not perfect, but it wouldn’t be so affordable if it was.  This fits the bill for 90% of what you’ll need it for, and over the next year or two if you find yourself using it a lot more than expected (highly likely) you’ll find you can now pickup the GoPro HERO4 BLACK 4K for half as much.  Patience pays in this game – literally.
